Voting power in an ideological spectrum: The Markov-Pólya index

نویسنده

  • Thommy Perlinger
چکیده

Power distributions of voting games in which only certain coalitions are allowed, due to the fact that the players are spread across an ideological spectrum, are considered. The paper extends Edelman’s model [Edelman, P., 1997. A note on voting. Math. Soc. Sci. 34, 37–50] concerning ́ allowable coalitions. The Markov-Polya index is introduced as a parametrized family of power indices which has Edelman’s extension of the Shapley-Shubik index as a special case. Unlike the extended Shapley-Shubik index, it puts different weights on the allowable coalitions. For particular parameter values, simple explicit power formulas are derived.  2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. ́

An Effective and Optimal Fusion Rule in the Presence of Probabilistic Spectrum Sensing Data Falsification Attack

Cognitive radio (CR) network is an excellent solution to the spectrum scarcity problem. Cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) has been widely used to precisely detect of primary user (PU) signals. The trustworthiness of the CSS is vulnerable to spectrum sensing data falsification (SSDF) attack. In an SSDF attack, some malicious users intentionally report wrong sensing results to cheat the fusion c...

An improved approach for ranking the candidates in a voting system based on efficiency intervals

This paper proposes improvements and revisions to a recent approach in a voting system, and provides an effective approach with a stronger discriminate power. For this purpose, the advantage of a linear transformation is utilized to redene a previously used concept of virtual worst candidate, by incorporating the existing weight restrictions. Then, the best score of this virtual candidate is us...

A ‎N‎ew Voting Model For Groups With Members of Unequal Power and Proficiency‎

To proposing a voting model for groups with members of unequal power and proficiency, we present some models for rank ordering efficient candidates, by extending the ideas of some authors. Then, we propose a new methodology to rank the ranking models for the performance indices of only DEA efficient candidates based on a classical voting model. Also, an approach for combining the results obtain...

Ideological Adaptation? The Survival Instinct of Threatened Legislators

Do legislators remain at one point on the ideological spectrum for their entire careers, or do they update their ideological positions in response to the demands of constituents? Although theories of the electoral connection predict that legislators should adapt to voter demands, most empirical studies instead show that they maintain consistent positions in the face of changing political condit...

Return probability and k-step measures

The notion of return probability – explored most famously by George Pólya on d-dimensional lattices – has potential as a measure for the analysis of networks. We present an efficient method for finding return probability distributions for connected undirected graphs. We argue that return probability has the same discriminatory power as existing k-step measures – in particular, beta centrality (...
